Our spine specialists utilize advanced diagnostic tools to identify the cause of lumbar radiculopathy pain and determine the best treatment option. Lumbar radiculopathy is easily diagnosed, but the source of nerve root compression can be more complex to diagnose. However, radiographs have been overused generally, plain films are not routinely. Muscle spasms or musculoskeletal injury Plain radiographs are the most common type of imaging modality that is used in the workup of patients with LBP.Some of the possible causes of sciatica or lumbar radiculopathy include: While the symptoms can be the same, the cause and treatment can vary greatly. Irritated or compressed nerves in the lower back, or lumbar radiculopathy, can be caused by a wide variety of injuries or disorders. Sciatica and lumbar radiculopathy occur as a result of mechanical spine issues or soft tissue inflammation/spasms in the lower back. These include radiating pain, weakness, tingling and numbness that can start in the lower back and affect the buttocks, legs and feet. When the sciatic nerves are irritated or compressed, it can cause a set of symptoms, referred to as sciatica. These nerves travel down each side of the lower back through the pelvis and to each leg. Many nerve roots are in the lumbar spine, but the sciatic nerves are the largest. Caliber Pain™ offers effective lumbar radiculopathy treatment at our facility in Midtown Manhattan. If this occurs in the lower spine, it is called lumbar radiculopathy, which can cause lower back, buttock and leg pain, weakness or numbness. When these nerve roots are compressed or irritated within the spinal space, this is called radiculopathy. The sciatic nerve is commonly involved, so the condition is often called sciatica. The spine protects the spinal cord and nerve roots that leave the spine to the other areas of the body. With lumbar radiculopathy, nerve roots in the low back become irritated. To differentiate between radicular pain and radiculopathy, we propose to define this type of radiating pain, in which a specified cause can- not yet be found. This nerve extends down the back of the leg to the foot. This is a large nerve formed from several nerve roots in the low back. The nerve root is the part of the nerve that is closest to the spinal canal. As they leave the spinal canal, nerves pass through openings between the vertebrae. These branch off and leave the spinal canal, traveling out to parts of the body. ![]() In the lumbar spine, nerves run through this canal. This is a tunnel formed within the stacked vertebrae. They act as shock absorbers for the spine. These are soft pads of tissue between the vertebrae. The lumbar spine contains the 5 bottom vertebrae.ĭisks. These are bones that stack to form the spine. It can cause symptoms including pain, weakness, and numbness. To understand this condition, it helps to understand the parts of the spine: Radiculopathy happens when a nerve root in the spine is pinched or damaged. It causes symptoms that spread out from the back down one or both legs. Lumbar radiculopathy is irritation or inflammation of a nerve root in the low back.
